What’s in a name?: Wantagh was the sachem or chief of the Merokee indians and later the grand sachem of the Montauk Tribe.  Originally known as Jerusalem and later renamed Ridgewood, Wantagh was finally settled on as the permanent name for the hamlet to avoid confusion with the Queens town of the same name.

The distinct canyon landscape that we see today was only formed about 20,000 years ago during the Pleistocene Epoch, which technically speaking is still going on due to the ice sheets present in the Arctic and Antarctic regions.  (http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/cs/groups/public/documents/document/dcnr_015925.pdf)
